The servers that keep DOC online and playable in your browser cost real money every month. This is a preservation effort before it is anything else, and the game itself is never for sale.
If the community can sustain the machines, we keep the lights on together. If we can't, we wind down gracefully rather than lock the game behind a paywall. Nobody is ever priced out of playing.
